Bicycle Fitzgerald Tour

Fitzgerald is committed to being a bike friendly city. Georgia Bike Route 20 and the proposed Federal Bike Route 15 both run through Fitzgerald (see map). Read the City of Fitzgerald Bicycle Plan 2018 for future plans. But that’s not all there is. Take a look at the routes below and you will find Fitzgerald tours take on a new dimension when viewed from a bike.
Whether you're on a leisurely ride through downtown following the Architectural Treasures Tour or following one of the longer tours below, there's a distance that's just right for you.

The City Chicken Route (12.6 miles) begins at the Fitzgerald Welcome Center (right next door to the Blue & Gray Museum) and tours Fitzgerald's historic districts and neighborhoods, as well as Evergreen Cemetery. Keep your eyes peeled for Fitzgerald's Wild Burmese Chickens who free-range in the downtown area and are likely to dart across the street without warning!

The Jeff Davis Route (26.3 miles) begins downtown where you'll pass the Grand Theatre before heading out of town along the "Rebel Highway" winding your way through pastoral farms, fields, orchards, and woods. The Jefferson Davis Historic Site has a wonderful museum with Civil War artifacts and exhibits, a gift shop, picnic tables, restrooms, and a nature trail, so consider packing a lunch and spending some time at this historic site.  And don't forget to take your picture in front of the Jefferson Davis Memorial!

The Blue & Gray Route (34.8 miles) also begins in downtown Fitzgerald.  As you leave town, you'll pass the Grand Theatre and Evergreen Cemetery before venturing out into rural Ben Hill County. Paved roads lead you through the scenic countryside with some well-maintained dirt roads. Recommended use by mountain, hybrid, CycleCross and road bikes with 28” tires.

Please contact the Department of Tourism, Arts & Culture at (229) 426-5033 for more information. Then load up your bike and we'll see you in Fitzgerald!
