Granitoid Structures Tour
One of Fitzgerald’s ubiquitous building materials was locally produced on the corner of Lee and Pine Streets where a doctor’s office now stands. Granitoid was a form of what we now know as Face Block. There is some evidence it was produced under license from a New York company. For sure Granitoid was used to construct everything from churches to chicken coops. Manufactured prior to lightweight concrete, some blocks are as long as 32 inches and weigh over 100 pounds. The company also made an array of decorative items such as perimeter fencing and fascia trim. The company folded within 20 years, but you can still enjoy its legacy.
