Fitzgerald's Wild Chickens: A One-of-a-Kind Birding Experience
|
Tucked away in Fitzgerald, birders will find one of the most unusual entries on the American Birding Association checklist - the Red Junglefowl, the wild ancestor of every chicken on Earth. Thanks to recognition shared through the Georgia Bird Alert, these birds are now considered potential “life birds” for enthusiasts.
A RARE WILDLIFE STORY Fitzgerald’s free-roaming chickens are not typical barnyard birds. They descend from wild Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) imported from Burma in the 1960s as part of a U.S. wildlife program to establish new game birds. While most released populations disappeared, a small group adapted and survived in Fitzgerald’s unique urban environment. Today, roughly 900 birds roam freely through neighborhoods and downtown streets - making this one of the only places in the Western Hemisphere where you can observe a population closely tied to the species’ wild origins. WHY IT MATTERS * The Red Junglefowl is the original ancestor of all domestic chickens. * Pure wild populations are increasingly rare due to hybridization. * Fitzgerald’s birds offer a rare glimpse into this important species’ history. WHAT TO EXPECT Visitors can spot these bold birds strolling sidewalks, perching on rooftops, and foraging in gardens. Their presence adds a quirky charm to the city—and a unique draw for birders and photographers alike. PLAN YOUR VISIT Call our visitor's center and schedule a golfcart tour aka "A Chicken Safari".
