Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community while helping organizations that could use the extra hand or two. Below is a list of organizations active in our community that would truly appreciate your help.
ARTS COUNCIL - The Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Arts Council holds many art events throughout the year - including gallery exhibits, performances, classes, camps, and concerts. All of these events require help from our volunteers - getting the word out, answering phones, preparing foods, staffing the office, providing expertise, hosting, etc. If interested, please contact Brandy Elrod at (229) 426-5035.
BLUE & GRAY MUSEUM - The Blue & Gray Museum always has special projects, receptions, fill in hours, etc. We can tailor to your talents. Please call the museum at (229) 426-5033 and leave your contact info and interests.
CHRISTIAN KITCHEN - If you’re looking to add a little meaning to your day, stop by the Christian Kitchen located in the old Third Ward school in the 400 Block of S Sheridan Street. You can help with lunch for their 150 or so daily patrons or help put together food boxes for those in need. For more information, please contact Steve O'Neal at (229) 426-5483.
COACH A SPORT - The Department of Leisure Services (DLS) provides opportunities for coaching in baseball, softball, soccer, football, and basketball. As a coach, you can be a positive mentor and inspire a love of sports that sticks with children their whole lives. For more information, learn how to Be A Coach or call DLS at (229) 426-5050.
COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS - The mission of Communities In Schools of Fitzgerald/Ben Hill County is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. We believe every student needs and deserves a personal one-on-one relationship with a caring adult; a safe place to learn and grow; a healthy start and a healthy future; a marketable skill to use upon graduation and a chance to give back. COMMUNITY GARDEN - Like the feel of rich soil between your fingers, or eating a home grown tomato sandwich from a tomato you grew? Don’t have space for that garden you’ve always wanted? Your dream is at hand in the Fitzgerald Community Garden. The whole 500 Block of W Magnolia on the north side is available to folks like you. Read the instructions on the sign and get to planting.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - The Habitat for Humanity builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. For information on how you can volunteer locally, please contact Art Anderson at [email protected].
HOSPITAL - The Pink Ladies and Redcoats volunteer at the Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald, Ga. They maintain both gift shops and greet & welcome incoming visitors. They help out in both the Oncology and OB/GYN clinics, as well as Same Day Surgery. The Pink Ladies serve wherever they're needed - Blood Mobile, community projects, answering phones, and other duties requested by the hospital staff. HUMANE SOCIETY - The Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Humane Society is always looking for volunteers to help with fundraisers and the daily operation of the animal shelter. In order to volunteer you must not have been convicted of any crime against animals or children or a crime violent in nature. If you are interested in volunteering, please give us a call at (229) 426-5078 or stop by the animal shelter today.
LIBRARY - Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization of community citizens who share the desire to encourage the growth and welfare of the Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County Library. Friends host activities to help foster public awareness, understanding, and enjoyment of the Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County Library; they also hold fundraisers to provide funding for the library that is over and above the allotted city/county budget. MONITOR ENRICHMENT CENTER - The Monitor Enrichment Program was begun almost 20 years ago by retired teachers who recognized the need for additional after school education mentoring. Today it serves 40-50 kids daily and has proven to be a game changer in many young lives. It is located at the Monitor Community Center in the 500 Block of S Monitor Drive. SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER - Under the direction of Cathy Posey, the Ben Hill County Senior Citizen's Center provides the following services to Ben Hill County Residents age 60 and over: Coordinate and provide senior activities (quilting, Bingo, etc.) and services (nutrition program, etc.); Host meetings of AARP, Retired Teachers, Garden Clubs, Bridge Groups, Class Reunions; Singles Dance; Periodic health screenings; Hearing Aid Services; and Health Fairs. TGIF PROGRAM - Every other Friday, you can join the City Hall crew as we set out to keep Downtown spic and span through our TGIF Program. During our lunch hour, we fan out with buckets and grabbers and put a little sweat equity into Fitzgerald. You’re welcome to join in. Call City Hall at (229) 426-5060 to reserve your spot.
