Taxes
Below are descriptions of the various taxes, their rates and due dates. You will need to complete the appropriate form(s) and submit it along with your payment before the designated due date.
Property taxes
General Property taxes are ad valorem taxes levied on and assessed valuation of real and/or personal property. City taxes are customarily mailed out in September of each year and are due and payable on or before December 20th . The current tax millage rate is 12.00 mills. homestead exemption
The City of Fitzgerald has a $10,000 Homestead exemption for person 65 years of age or older. Application for the $10,000 exemption from all City Ad Valorem Taxes must be completed and submitted by March 31st . Applicant must be 65 years of age by January 1st of the year for which this exemption is claimed, applicant must be the bona fide owner of the property for which this tax exemption is claimed and applicant must actually occupy same as residence. Business & Occupation Taxes
The City of Fitzgerald levies an occupation tax on every business operating in the City of Fitzgerald under the provisions of State Law O.C.G.A. §48-13. The occupation tax is levied each calendar year upon all businesses and practitioners of professions with one or more locations in the City of Fitzgerald or upon out-of- State businesses that meet the requirement under State Law. The occupation tax levy is based on the number of employees of the business. The City of Fitzgerald forwards a Business and Occupation Tax Application to all businesses on file in December of each year to be completed and returned with updated business information. Hotel/Motel Tax
The City of Fitzgerald imposes an excise tax on rooms, lodging and accommodations at a rate of eight percent (8%) of the charge to the public for the room, lodging or accommodations. The tax payment is due by the 20th of the following month and a penalty of 3% must be added if payment has not been made by the 20th of the month. Payment should be made payable to the City of Fitzgerald and may be mailed to 302 East Central Avenue or hand delivered to same address. Alcohol Beverage Excise Tax
All licensed wholesale dealers in malt beverages, whisky and wine must remit to the City of Fitzgerald an excise tax based on the distribution of malt beverages, distilled spirits or wine. A report must be filed with the payment noting exact quantities by size and type of container sold during the within the municipality. Report and payment must be remitted by the 10th of each month for the preceding month.
excise tax on liquor by the drink
There is imposed upon all sales of liquor by the drink in the City of Fitzgerald, Georgia a tax in the amount of three percent (3%) of the purchase price of each drink to the consumer. The Excise Tax return and payment should be submitted to the City of Fitzgerald no later than the 20th of the following calendar month.
