Georgia Search & Rescue (GSAR) Program
The National Urban Search and Rescue Response System was created by FEMA following Hurricane Hugo. This system coordinates the selection, training, equipping, mobilization, and deployment of Federal and civilian search and rescue resources. These assets are used to augment State and local resources in disaster areas. The US&R task force is the fundamental unit of FEMA’s National USAR Response System. Each task force is sponsored by a State or local government jurisdiction. The state of Georgia created the Ga. Search and Rescue (GSAR) program to assist in these efforts. The primary mission of GSAR is the coordination, development, and maintenance of the resources to locate, extricate, provide immediate medical treatment to victims trapped in collapsed structures, and to conduct other life-saving operations.
Our Region (8) GSAR Task Force created in 2011 is based in Ware County includes members from departments within our region; these members are trained to handle many technical emergency rescue situations. The Fitzgerald Fire Department proudly assists the efforts of the team and its members. Fitzgerald Fire Dept. has 7 firefighters that are part of the team and one participating with K9 efforts. These firefighters participate in many advanced specialized areas of training. These areas include High Angle Rope, Confined Space, Trench, Structural Collapse, Wilderness Search and Rescue. The team is tasked to provide mutual aid for technical rescue incidents in our area and to provide additional resources if needed. The team has provided assistance for many local, state and federal declared incidents including such as tornadoes, hurricanes, missing persons search efforts, among other technical rescue incidents.
The Fitzgerald Fire Department is proud to have firefighters trained to these levels to also serve our citizens in the department’s ongoing mission to provide our local citizens with the best efforts of emergency response.

HAZ MAT
The Fitzgerald Fire Department is currently involved in the "Region 8 Haz Mat Team." This team is comprised of various members of other departments in our region that are trained to the Technical level and higher in order to handle different types of hazardous materials incidents. The team members are charged with the task of completing yearly training in order to stay up to date with the new strategies and tactics of handling such incidents.
Career Day
Each year the Fitzgerald Fire Department is asked to participate in local school's "Career Day." Our involvement consists of showing some of our highly technical equipped fire engines along with our advance rescue systems tools to the areas most promising students. We also demonstrate various types of firefighting techniques as well as different types of high angle ladder rescues. Another part of the day's activities is demonstrating our personal protective clothing that is required to wear in firefighting operations.
Fire Prevention for Kids
The Fitzgerald Fire Department is proudly active in youth fire prevention. It is our belief that house fires are greatly reduced by teaching fire prevention to our area youth. We visit schools, churches, and various other youth group organizations on a regular basis to teach fire prevention and have seen drastically reduced number of house fires. Fire prevention with kids is one of our most treasured involvements with our public. We use different types of teaching methods, as well as encourage all students to be involved in each class. We also invite the students to tour our station.
