Divisions
The Fitzgerald Police Department consists of three major departmental Divisions: Administrative, Field Services, and Support Services. These Divisions are designed to offer maximum potential services to the citizens of the City of Fitzgerald while maintaining financial responsibility to those same citizens.

CHIEF OF POLICE, WILLIAM SMALLWOOD, JR. As the Executive Officer, all other Divisions gain their authority from this Office, which oversees the complete day to day operations of all other divisions and all other division commanders achieve their authority from the Chief of Police. Division Commanders serve to direct, train, supervise and discipline when needed, those officers subordinate to them.

MAJOR JAMES REYNOLDS operates as the commanding officer in the absence of the Chief of Police and serves as Field Services Division Commander in the course of day to day operations. The division also acts as the agency Field Training coordinator and the Liaison with the Regional Police Academy located in Tifton, GA. The Major:

CAPTAIN TODD MCCARD is the division commander over the Professional Standards. The primary function of this office is to oversee the department's State Certification Program. This office also processes and investigates all Internal Affairs Complaints and Citizen Complaints. The yearly training and in-service training is the responsibility of the Professional Standards Division. Each officer is required by the GA POST Council to receive 20 hours of in-service training each year. The Fitzgerald Police Department however requires its officers to receive 40 hours of training. This position also oversees the departments Recruitment and Retention specialist including all hiring boards and ensuring that all mandated requirements for new employees are met. This position occasionally acts as the official grant writer for the agency and assists the Investigative Division.

CITY MARSHAL LEON JOHNSON A separate but important sister agency is the Office of the City Marshal. This agency is responsible for the enforcement of all city codes. The Marshal’s office also handles special city-wide projects for code enforcement.
SECRETARIES AND CLERKS ensure that citizens are greeted cordially and treated professionally. The massive amount of call and paper work generated by a law-enforcement agency is staggering. The clerks are responsible for filing incident and accident reports. They also have the task of running criminal histories for the public and disseminating incident and accident reports.

Field services
The Field Services Division is under the direct control and supervision of the Major. This division operates twenty four hours a day seven days a week. Field Services contains the Patrol and the Downtown Officer. The police department has a downtown precinct where the downtown officer is assigned. Part of his assignments is to be visible in our businesses downtown and handle any escorts that come out for calls of service. The patrol division is comprised of four squads working within rotational basis to provide round the clock coverage. Patrol Officers respond to 911 calls for emergency service as well as calls from the department. Officers work 12-hour shifts with rotating weekends off. The division prides itself on quick response times and aggressive patrol tactics. Traffic Enforcement policies are designed to gain voluntary compliance with existing traffic laws. Patrol Officers are the departments’ first line of citizen encounter and are trained to both protect the citizenry and enforce the law with compassion and discretion.

The Support Services Division is supervised from the office of the Chief of Police. The division commander reports directly to the Office of the Chief. Support services handles’ all criminal investigations, and the prosecution of those cases at the superior court level. The Detectives assigned to this division have all received advanced training and skills to better serve the community. The Division maintains office hours of Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm and an on-call schedule for after-hours incidents or activities.
