The local EMS houses five ambulances and one rescue truck and has a full-time
staff of five paramedics and five emergency medical technicians.
Fire Protection
The City of Fitzgerald operates a single fire station (located at the corner
of Sherman Street and Central Avenue), with 22 full-time firefighters. The

areas of Ben Hill County are served by six volunteer fire stations. The

Law Enforcement
The 30-officer Fitzgerald Police Department, headquartered at 255 Appomatox
Rd. and supervised by Chief Bill Smallwood, handles law enforcement for

Ben Hill County Department of Human
Resources/ Department of Family and Children Services
Transitional Services/DFACS, housed at 125 South Grant Street, provides
a variety of services to children, adults, and eligible families. For additional

Health Facilities
Fitzgerald's primary care hospital, Dorminy Medical Center, is located on Perry House Road.
Surrounding this state-of-the-art facility are physicians' offices and suites,
ranging from general practitioners to an ever-growing speciality clinic.

is opened weekdays to offer preventive measures as needed by people in the
community. In addition to this, two nursing homes, eight dentists, and a
