Fitzgerald – Ben Hill County Humane Society
Thanks to the efforts of concerned citizens, a humane society was established in this area and a shelter was opened in August of 1996.
The Fitzgerald – Ben Hill County Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals. Our primary purposes are the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals and the promoting of humane education. In fulfilling these purposes, it is the policy of the Humane Society to provide care and treatment for all animals entrusted to our care, to reunite lost pets and their owners, to humanely euthanize those suffering animals that are neither returned to their owners nor adopted and to offer education programs for children and adults alike.
The Fitzgerald – Ben Hill County Humane Society will take in over 2,000 animals each year. Many of these often times abandoned, abused or unwanted animals. The Humane Society’s task is to not only rescue these animals from their cruel and inhumane living conditions, but also to give these animals the love and care they deserve.
Every animal that is adopted out of our shelter is subject to mandatory spay/neuter laws. In every adoption fee paid to the shelter a spay or neuter fee is included. This ensures that the animal will not continue to contribute to the animal overpopulation in the community.
The Humane Society is required by local ordinances to hold all animals at the shelter for a period of seventy-two (72) hours (3 days) at which time they then become property of the Humane Society. After this time frame, the Humane Society is authorized and permitted to place the animal for adoption or dispose by way of euthanasia.
During the seventy-two (72) hour waiting period, if an owner wishes to reclaim an animal impounded, they may do so, by showing proof of identification and ownership, along with paying the set fees by the Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors of The Fitzgerald – Ben Hill County Humane Society consists of nine (9) members from the Fitzgerald – Ben Hill County area. The Board of Directors meet monthly, being every third (3rd) Thursday of each month, at 5:30 p.m. at the City Hall Conference Room, located at 302 East Central Avenue.
