The City of Fitzgerald, incorporated in 1896, is governed by a mayor and a nine-person council. The mayor serves a four-year term and is elected by a majority vote of the eligible citizens. All council members also serve staggered four-year terms. Four members represent wards (1st, Western; 2nd, Eastern; 3rd, Eastern; 4th, Western) and are selected by majority vote. Also selected by majority vote are two at-large positions, one from the western district and one from the eastern. The remaining three seats are at-large ones filled by plurality vote. The Council meets in chambers (115 South Main Street) at 6:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Management of the day-to-day operations of the city goes through the office of City Administrator. This office, as well as those of the City Clerk and Financial Officer, is located at City Hall, 116 North Johnston Street, Fitzgerald, Georgia.
