Of prime importance in any community is the quality of the safety personnel and facilities. Through the work of dedicated officials, Fitzgerald continues its efficient and dedicated commitment to the service of its citizens.

Fitzgerald Police Department
Consisting of 28 full-time, duly sworn officers, the Police Department serves as the main body of law enforcement in the city. There are also eight support personnel and one court officer on staff. Headquarters, including the office of Chief Bill Smallwood, are located at 255 Appomattox Rd. The FPD occupies a precinct in the Roanoke Homes area and plans to open a second precinct soon. For non-emergencies, call (229) 426-5000.

Fitzgerald Fire Department
The Fitzgerald Fire Department, whose 22 fire fighters and officers are guided by Chief Jay Whitley, provides a superb service to our community. Currently, the city's fire classification is 4. Equipment and training in the fire department are constantly being upgraded to ensure our town is well protected. For example, the FFD is now developing a hazardous materials (hazmat) unit equipped to handle industrial/chemical emergencies.

The Ben Hill County Volunteer Fire Department, with its six stations, also serves Fitzgerald.
